On February 1st my little William decided to swallow a screw. He had been put in his room in time out for hurting his sister. After only being up there for about 2 minutes I heard crying so I went to check on him. He was crying and coughing and he kept saying his tongue hurt. He kept coughing and crying and then started throwing up. He was holding a remote control and at first I though maybe the batteries had shocked him. He finally stopped throwing up and I got him to calm down and cleaned up. William has a speech delay so I couldn't get a straight answer about what had happened. At this point he seemed fine. He did have a plastic bag that had a screw in it and I couldn't remember if there had been 2 screws. (I know I am sounding like a horrible mother, but he did scale his bookshelf to get this bag that had the remote control and screws.) Ryan was gone all day at a school thing and I wasn't sure what else to do. The on call pediatrician said well maybe he would be ok. I didn't feel ok with that answer. So I called my wonderful visiting teacher and she came over to watch Truman and Michelle. I took Will to the ER just to be safe. They took the x-ray and it showed up in less then 2 second. In my heart I was really hoping that it wasn't in there. So we sat there for 5 hours while the doctor waited for word back from the children's hospital. They sent us home and told me to watch him very carefully. It was moving along in his little body but it was so sharp they didn't want it to perforate his bowl. We went back the next day for a follow up x-ray and it showed it was still moving. That afternoon I was a brave mommy and fished through his poop and found the screw. I did it for peace of mind and to save me another trip to the ER. Luckily everything turned out ok.
